How does the mail-in knife service work?

  1. PACK – Pack up your knives securely with a cork, tape, or something else to protect the tips from poking through the box. Make sure to include your name either on the shipping label.
  2. COMPLETE OUR ONLINE FORM –  Before you ship anything to us, please complete this online form and review the shipping policy below

* Shipping Policy:

By shipping your knife/knives in to us you agree to these terms.

  • Limit of liability:
      • Our Responsibilities: REK LLC (“We”) is/are only responsible for items shipped to us while in our care. We guarantee to take care of the items and that they will get back to the shipping company (USPS) and that we will file an insurance claim for the amount you specify in the online form above should something happen to your package (note: if claim is approved, claim will not be paid to you until at least 120 days have passed since the original payment was processed). If you provided the label for UPS or Fedex then you are responsible for filing any claim should the need arise. If/when this money is paid to us, it will be in turn given to you minus any expenses we have incurred (if any). Regardless of anything else mentioned in our shipping policy, by shipping your items to us, you agree that you will not hold us responsible for lost/damaged/stolen items in the mail, whether or not insurance is filed or a claim paid. Even if the item shows ‘delivered’ we have had packages delivered to the wrong address in the past and this is considered a lost package.

        Should anything else happen to your knife while in our possession (fire, theft, etc) then you will be reimbursed up to a maximum of $700 per knife or $1500 per package (whichever is applicable). The value of your package/knives will be determined by the insurance value you put in our online form when you filled it out – if you need this amount changed please email me (josh@rekknives.com)

      • Customer’s Responsibilities
          • Any work (other than basic sharpening) done to your knife/knives will likely void your warranty and we shall not be held responsible.
          • Any work we do could result in injury or death and by sending your items to us you agree to not hold us responsible in any way.
          • It is the customer’s responsibility and decision to pick a shipping company they trust or to not ship at all. There is always a risk so if you aren’t comfortable with that then do not ship your item. It is also the customer’s responsibility and decision to get insurance on the package both to us and on the return trip for the full amount of the knives plus the cost of the work we will have done. Should an insurance claim need to be made, you, as the customer, agree to provide us with any requested documentation regarding the original purchase value of your knife/knives or the value of your knife/knives in their current condition. 
    • Note that if something happens to your package on the return trip, no money we have received for the work we performed will be reimbursed (insurance reimbursement, if it is approved, will certainly be given to you after deducting any expenses). By shipping to us you agree that we will not be held liable for items that are  lost/damaged/stolen in the mail, or miss-delivered either in the sending or return. Our maximum liability while in our care is $1,500 per package (note there is a $700 per knife maximum liability), per customer while in our care. 
  • Shipping carriers and insurance:  Return insurance is now mandatory for the work we performed to your items (this amount is added into your bill). We only the USPS for return shipping (unless you provide the label, but note that shipping times may be significantly delayed). If you used USPS to ship your item and got their insurance, we will alternately use a private insurance for the return trip unless you specify otherwise and we acknowledge receipt of these instructions. Orders over $500 in total value will be required to have signature confirmation for the return shipment (note that there is an additional fee of $3.50-$4 for this service that is not included with the private insurance we use so it will be extra in addition to the insurance charge).
  • There is a handling fee of $3 per package that REK adds to all invoices. 
  • International orders: We do provide service internationally, however return shipping will be through whichever carrier we deem best, with signature confirmation being required if the work is above $500. For safety purposes folding knives will be shipped back in a disassembled condition if possible.
  • Scope limitations of work: By sending your knife in you agree that any knives you send are not sentimental or irreplaceable OR that the knives have a $700 (or less) replacement value per knife (see ‘Limit of Liability’ section above). To clarify the above, sentimental or non-replaceable knives should not be mailed in period as there is always the possibility that something could happen to your package during transit. 

** Payment Policy:

By shipping your knife/knives in to us you agree to these terms.

  • Payment in full is required prior to the return shipment and us usually paid with either an account or card via Wave; other payment methods available upon request. 
  • Payment in full must be made within 90 days of the notification of completion or REK LLC becomes the sole owner the property for which the payment was being made, and may sell it to recuperate labor/material costs.
  • Upon 30 days past the notification of completion payment will only be allowed via cash, USPS Money Order, or a Zelle money transfer.
  • A late fee of $5 per week shall be charged every week from the notification of completion (which is usually in the form of a digital invoice).
