Corrosion testing of our new DLC coating

Just today I concluded some corrosion testing. You may have noticed but one side was beadblasted (satin finish) and the other sandblasted (matte finish) so I could see how each side faired in testing.

The first thing to note is ALL DLC COATINGS ARE NOT EQUAL, and this testing applies specifically to the coating that I use. The DLC I use has been tested and compared against over 2 dozen other DLC coatings and was found to be superior.

I stripped the blade of oil and soaked it in a saltwater solution of ~3000 ppm (parts per million) for 3+ days before adding a control blade (bead and sandblasted as well, and stripped of oil). The blades continued to soak for another 5 days, with me periodically taking them out of the solution and allowing them to air dry (to speed up the oxidation process).

Here is what the blades looked like just after drying them, no cleaning. The mottled appearance is the salt that has dried on the surface:

After wiping them both down in the same method with a micro fiber towel and some oil, I was AMAZED. Check it out, no corrosion stains on the DLC blade! I took these pics w/ the same sub finish showing on each blade (beadblasted vs sandblasted). There was some pitting and staining from the control blade which could not be removed without sanding it out.

Update 8/2019

You guys may find this interesting! Just the other day I was able to compare the DLC I use with 2 other competitor DLC coatings. First, I competely degreased this 1095 carbon steel (which was specifically selected for my testing). Then I soaked for 2 days in 2800 ppm salt water, and then spend another day removing the wet knives from the salt solution and allowing them to air dry, then repeating (to expedite the oxidation process).

The DLC I use is the one with the least oxidation damage… actually there was none after cleaning up with a little bit of flitz (which doesn’t affect the DLC whatsoever).

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention it also cut through 60 ft. of carpet with zero wear as well? If there is one thing I’ve learned in trying over 2 dozen DLC coatings from all over the nation – all DLC coatings are NOT equal.
